On this day in 1870, Canada acquires Rupert's Land from Hudson's Bay Company(Posted:05/11/2012) Canada: The lands draining into the Hudson's Bay, which incoprorate portons of Quewbec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchwan, Alberta, and today's Nunavut were acquired by Canada, just after Confederation for 300,000 pimds ($1.5 million). The land that covered 3.9 million square kilometres (1.5 million sq mi), is over one-third of Canada's area today. It was acquired following the Red River Rebellion.

'Fines double in construction zones' signs not true(Posted:05/04/2012) BC: With all of the work going on along the Trans-Canada highway through the Lower Mainland, you’ve probably noticed signs warning you to slow down or risk paying double for traffic tickets.
Currently, a regular speeding ticket will cost you $138. In a construction zone, the fine jumps to $196 – a 42 per cent increase. If the fines were actually doubled as the signs say, the fine would be $276.
In Alberta, however, the fines ARE DOUBLE. More info...
No escaping hobo cop: New tactic aims to catch drivers using cellphones on the road(Posted:05/03/2012) Canada: A scruffy looking man — hoodie up, clutching a tattered sign scrawled on a scrap of cardboard — shuffled up to a car at a busy intersection in this city west of Toronto. Drivers instinctively looked away.
But this sign’s wording was different from the usual begging appeal: “My name is Constable Mike Cairns. If you are reading this sign you are about to get a cell phone ticket.”
