What to See & Do between Fort MacLeod and Medicine Hat?

Fort MacLeod is a small town, the site of one of the first forts for the Northwest Mounted Police to bring law and order to Caada’s sild west, and to stop American traders from plying local Indigenous people with liquor. Just to the north of town is the UNESCO Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump Historical Site, which is absolutely worth the detour, to see both beautiful landscape and learn how the Indigenous peoples living on the prarie managed to efficientlyhunt the buffalo / bison. Between Fort MacLeod and Lethbridge is a twinned section of Highway 3, to safewly speed truckers and travellers heading to-from the US border crossing at Coutts, via Highway 4 south of Lethbridge. To the south of the highway is a large reserve for the Stoney (Kanai) First Nations (you see a large sign off the highway that proclaims “Tjis is Indian Land!”) that includes the town of Standoff and runs south to the town of Cardston, which is the site of the first Mormopn Temple in Canada.
You pass by Coaldale, once a thriving coal mining community, and the town of Taber, best know for its sweet mid-summer corn. From Taber is a nice 2-1/2 hour detour south to Milk River (the one waterway in Canada that flows to the Gulf of Mexico via the Missouri and Mississippi rivers), and Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park, named for the ancient petroglyphs found on the cliffs.
As you hit Bow Island you enter into eastern Alberta’s natural gas producing area, which continues to Medicine Hat. At the junction with 887, you can drive south to Red Rock Coulee (about 15 minutes drive) where you can see human-sized red rock boulders in an arid near-desert micro-climate.
NOTE If Fort MacLeod does not have empty rooms, then we recommend staying in nearby Lethbridge, about 50 km to the east.
