Vermillion History

The area around Vermilion was originally inhabited by the Cree and Blackfoot Indigenous peoples who lived her for thousands of years. The first European fur traders and explorers visited in the late 1700s.

When the Canadian Northern Railway (CNR) built a line through the area in 1904, the town of Vermilion was officially established. It was named after the vermilion-colored clay deposits found in the region. With the arival of the railroad,  there was rapid growth and development, with farmers growing wheat, barley, oats, and other crops, and  new businesses  established to serve the needs of the growing population.

After World War II, Vermilion continued to grow and develop, with the construction of new schools, hospitals, and other public facilities.
