BC Highway itinerary: Horseshoe Bay (West Vancouver) to Hope #1

What to See & Do Between Horseshoe Bay (West Vancouver) and Hope

The Trans-Canada skirts the actual City of Vancouver, to the north on the Upper Levels Highway with its views over the rest of the Lower Mainland, and then though the suburban communities of Burnaby, New Westminster, and Surrey. The bridges over the Second Narrows and the Fraser River provide sore great views of the communities around them, and of the busy river traffic below. West of Langley, you drive past miles of lush green farmland, the breadbasket of BC, hemmed in by the Cascade Mountains to the south.

Here is the itinerary for the 171 km along the #1 highway between Lion’s Bay (West Vancouver) and Hope:

Passing Through Greater Vancouver

The North Shore Mountains are a spectacular part of the Vancouver city skyline. These mountains are made of granite, and the Ice Age coastline was 150 m above the current sea level, showing how much the land rose once the weight of glaciers was lifted. Today’s mild maritime climate enables Douglas firs to grow to 100 metres, and the red cedars and western hemlock grow to unusual size as well. For those who have time, should take gondola rides to the top of Cypress Mountain  or Grouse Mountain, or hike the deep forest trails around and below the Capilano and Lynn Valley suspension bridges which hang high above their respective deep river valleys.

TTugboat Pulling Log Raft Past Indian ArmThe Upper Levels Highway was Canada’s original “highway 401” and was relabeled the “#1” as it became part of the Trans Canada Highway system. The flats of the ancient Ice Age shoreline are the route followed by the  Upper Levels Highway after climbing from the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal, with the North Shore Mountains (and the posh British Properties area) above and to the north.  The Trans-Canada never really goes “through” Vancouver, but grants fleeting south views of the city between gaps in the coastal forest along the highway’s route.

Vancouver-Lion Gate Bridge from Stanley Park seawall
Vancouver-Lion Gate Bridge from Stanley Park seawall

One access to Vancouver is taking the Lions Gate Bridge, which  passes Park Royal Mall on the north shore, crosses Burrard Inlet and cuts through the heavily forested iconic Stanley Park before entering downtown Vancouver. This road also marks the dividing line between West Vancouver (to the west) and North Vancouver (to the east).

The highway drops elevation quickly to cross the Burrard Inlet on the Second Narrows (Ironworkers Memorial) Bridge, you can also see Burnaby Mountain and significant bulk oil terminals to the east of the bridge, Washington State’s snow-capped  Mount Baker (a dormant volcano, you’ll recognize by its conical shape) to the southeast, and to the west you will see Vancouver’s waterfront and skyline, and magnificent Stanley Park and the Lion’s Gate Bridge.

If you want to get to downtown Vancouver from this point, watch for the East Hastings exit (right by the Pacific National Exhibition (“PNE”) grounds on the south side of the Cassiar Connector (a tunnel that moves the Trans-Canada below busy Burnaby east-west commuter thoroughfares), and drive west  past the busy container port toward  the city skyline.. It then bends  southward  around the south shore of Burnaby Lake with its recreational and cultural facilities. To the north above Burnaby Lake, you see 350m high Burnaby Mountain with the magnificent Arthur Ericson-designed Simon Fraser University perched atop. From that hilltop, you have stunning views of noth Burrard Inlet and Indian Arm to the north (see our Rich Tourist- Poor Tourist story for tips), Port Moody and Coquitlam expand to the east, and you can see Vancouver to the west.   New Westminster was the first capital city of British Columbia, and  was the initial endpoint of the Canadian Pacific trans-continental railway, though today is a cluster of highrises nestled against the north bank of the Fraser River.

Heading into the Fraser Valley

Chilliwack Farms with view South To Mount ThomThe two kilometer long 10-lane wide Port Mann Bridge (toll bridge) crosses the Fraser River into SurreyLangley and the lush farmlands of the “Lower Mainland”. In Surrey, at the Highway 15 Junction, you can also go southwest along the South Fraser Perimeter Route (the “SFP{R”) to the Tsawwassen Ferry crossing to Sidney, BC) From the bridge, you see log booms, lumber mills, and-in season-fishermen harvesting the seasonal salmon runs that continue for 800 kilometres inland. At the south end of Surrey, along the US border is the seashore town of White Rock.

The lush Fraser Valley is western Canada’s largest fruit, vegetable, and flower growing area, with large farms on both sides of the highway. Midway between Chilliwack and Abbotsford, on the south side of the highway, is the beautiful Bridal Veil Falls. East of Abbotsford you will notice drainage channels built in 1929 that have enabled cultivation of thousands of hectares of former marshlands.

Signpost at Hope, BCThe town of Hope grew quickly in 1858 when gold was discovered in several areas further up the Fraser River. The town is surrounded by stunning scenery, where mountains tower a kilometer or more over the river valley, and was showcased in Silvester Stallone’s “First Blood” action movie, filmed nearby. From this point, you head north on #1 up the Fraser Canyon, northeast on the speedy #5 Coquhilla Highway, or east meandering on the #3 Crowsnest Highway  to Oliver and Osoyoos in the Okanagan Valley and BC’s Wine Country
