The Pessamit Indian Reserve is located approximately 50 km upstream from Baie-Comeau. In 2005, the band council of Betsiamites was replaced by the council of the Innu of Pessamit and, on November 6, 2008, the Commission de toponymie accepted the change of the name Indian Reserve of Betsiamites to that of Indian Reserve of Pessamit. The inhabitants of a Montagnais village were identified from the first European explorations. Champlain indeed reports its presence on his 1632 map where he mentions the Bersiamist Savages. Under the French Regime, a trading post was established at the mouth of the Betsiamites River. Referred to as Pointe-des-Bersimites by Hocquart in 1733, however, it is believed to be located on the west bank of the river rather than on the east bank where the village is currently located.
