Lewisporte is just 11 kilometres north of Route 1, theTrans Canada Highway, and is where you can catch a ferry to Labrador and to the rustic islands just off the coast. Lewisporte is named for Lewis Miller, an Scotsman who started a logging company in central Newfoundland (interestingly, nearby Millertown is also named for him).

Stop at the Visitor Information Centre at Notre Dame Junction (Route 340) to get information on the ferries to Fogo Island and Change Island, as well as where the icebergs are. You can take a break at Notre Dame Provincial Park, just east of the town on Route 1.
