ON Highway Itinerary: Ottawa to Montreal, Quebec via #417

What to See & Do between Ottawa and Montreal?

This route has two options: the fast (via highway 417) which can get you into Montreal in 2-3 hours, and the leisurely (via old Highway 17) which can take a day driving alongside the Ottawa River through early settlement period small towns. Until the 1976 Montreal Olympics, this was the only route!

Ontario Itinerary - Ottawa - Montreal

Here is the itinerary for the 186 km along Ontario #417 and Quebec #40 between Ottawa, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec:

National Capital Region

Samuel De Champlain Statue at Nepean PointThis segment of the highway begins between the Rideau Canal and the Rideau River, where Nicholas Street takes you into downtown along the east bank of the Canal, past University of Ottawa, the Conference Centre, and Rideau Centre. When you get close to Rideau Street, you see the Chateau Laurier Hotel ahead of you, the Parliament Building’s Peace Tower to the left a bit, and the National Arts Centre and the Ottawa City Hall to your very left, across the canal. West of the Rideau River is largely English-speaking (“anglophone”) portion of Ottawa, and east of the Rideau River is largely French-speaking (“francophone”) portion of Ottawa.

Rideau Canal: Lock full with pleasurecraftThe 206 kilometre long Rideau Canal connected Kingston and Ottawa, using the Cataraqui River from Kingston, and the Rideau River from Ottawa. The canal was built after the War of 1812, when England realized they cannot rely on the St Lawrence to move troops to defend the western interior of Upper Canada. In those days, that meant along Lake Huron and Lake Superior, which required the Rideau Canal to Lake Ontario, the Welland Canal to Lake Erie, and the Trent Canal to Lake Huron.

The Rideau Canal used 47 locks and 24 dams to climb 49 metres (160 feet) above Lake Ontario, and then fall 84 metres (275 ft) back down to the Ottawa River. Today, the canal is known as a favourite recreational waterway (from May to October) and as “the world’s longest skating rink” with 5.5 kilometres of ice surface (from late December to late February).

Ottawa's Queensway, the 417 through the city

The area east of Ottawa is flat rural land, with a shallow covering of topsoil on top of Canadian Shield. This area was settled in the first half of the 1800s, by settlers from the British Isles, as well as soldiers who were given land claims as reward for their service in the War of 1812 and the subsequent construction of the Rideau Canal.

The Lower Ottawa Valley

East of Ottawa, you cross the Nations River at Casselman, and about halfway, you pass highway 34 to Vankleek Hill and Hawkesbury, which lies on the Ottawa River (with a bridge to Quebec). Soon the highway runs parallel to the Ottawa River as you pass the edge of Voyageur Provincial Park (you would take exit 5 to Highway 4, north). The park extends to the Ontario-Quebec border a few kilometres further. Just east of Grande Montee Road bridge and 2 turn-arounds (they are for official vehicles to return to their province, not for public traffic) you enter Quebec!

The Old Highway 17 Route along the Ottawa River

For a leisurely drive, take the Old Highway 17 along the Ottawa River, rather than the 417, and see the pace of rural life as it used to be. Until the Montreal Olympics in 1976, this meandering Highway 17 route right beside the Ottawa River WAS the Trans-Canada. From Ottawa to Cumberland, this route is numbered #174

Montreal Area

Montreal City Hall at night

As the highway gets close to Montreal, you have a couple of quick decisions to make.

The first major interchange is for AutoRoute 20 (east through Montreal, which then continues along the North Shore of the St Lawrence to Trois Riviere and Quebec City ). You can also head west to Highway 401 to Kingston, Toronto, and Windsor. Heading EAST on A20, you cross the Pont de I’lle-aux-Tourtes bridge. This bridge  connectd Dorion (pronounced “Doh-ree-ohn”) and Vaudreuil (pronunced “Voh-dreh”)  to the Island of Montreal (pronounced “Mohn-reh-ul”).

Or you can continue straight on AutoRoute 30 to the next important junction:

AutoRoute 40  east through Montreal closer to downtown and then continues across the St Lawrence and then east along the south shore to Sain-Hyacinthe,  Drummondville, and Levis (just across the St Lawrence from Quebec City). Once you cross the Ottawa River’s Lac des Deux Montagnes onto the Island of Montreal, you drive past the largely English-speaking suburban West Island communities. The Trans-Canada passes right by Montreal’s Dorval Airport (now “Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport”, ironically named for the prime minister from Montreal who funded the ill-fated Mirabel International Airport north of the city, which was intended to get Dorval closed down.

Or, you continue south to AutoRoute 30 south shore bypass around Montreal (toll route. AutoRoute 30  takes you over the St Lawrence TWICE, once over the Seaway and once over the river itself. The Toll-Plaza (in both directions) is just north of the Seaway bridge.

Cyclist Highway Notes

Cyclists travelling this stretch should head east in Ottawa along Rideau Street and the Montreal Road (Route 34), following the Ottawa River east of Orleans (now route 174) to Rockland (now Route 17) to Hawkesbury.

Here is a good (and low traffic) bridge to cross the Ottawa River, and then travel south-east on the Quebec side on Route 344 into the Montreal suburbs at Deux-Montagne.
