Woodstock, Ontario

Woodstock is situated in Oxford County, is located to the north of Highway 401,  approximately halfway between the cities of London and Kitchener in southwestern Ontario. Woodstock and bisected by the east-west Highway 2, midway between London and Brantford. Woodstock, with a population of 45,000, has a diversified economy with a mix of manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, and retail sectors.

Woodstock History

Woodstock was first settled in the early 1800s by European pioneers of mainly British and German descent. The area has fertile soil and lies close to the Thames River, providing a suitable environment for agriculture.

In 1793, Woodstock was selected as the county seat of Oxford County and by 1851, Woodstock was officially incorporated as a town.

The arrival of the Grand Trunk Railway in 1847 provided a vital transportation link for the movement of industrial goods and people.  Woodstock grew into an industrial center for furniture manufacturing, textile mills, and agricultural machinery production.

The Woodstock Agricultural Society was established in 1836, and initiated the annual Woodstock Fair in 1853, which became a prominent agricultural event in the region and continues to this day

In the 1980s, Woodstock became home to a major industrial development with the establishment of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada. The facility produces vehicles and contributes significantly to the local economy.

The Woodstock Museum, located in a former CPR station, offers exhibits and artifacts that showcase the history of Woodstock, including its early settlement, industrial development, and cultural heritage.
