The Belle River area was first settled in the early 1800s, though only accessible by boat, and was initially known as Bear River. After the first bridge to Belle River was constructed in the late 1800s, the improved access improved the market access for area farmers and fishers. and by the early 1900s there were several sawmills.
In the 1940s, the community was served by a railway line, however, the railway was decommissioned in the 1980s. The line was eventually converted into a popular walking trail.
