Murray River is located in the eastern part of Prince Edward Island, just northeast of the Wood Islands ferry terminal.
In the early 1800s, a steady stream of immigrants from Scotland, Ireland, and England. Settled in the Murray Harbour. Murray River was first officially surveyed in 1831, and the area was granted to Thomas Rice, who became the first landowner in the region.
During the 1800s. The Murray River wharf was important for the transportation of goods and people to and from around the world. Area residents were busy fishing, shipbuilding, and other maritime activities. At their peak, four shipyards employed hundreds of workers in Murrary River.
The community’s shipyards produced some of the finest wooden vessels on the East Coast of North America. At its peak, there were four shipyards operating in Murray River, employing hundreds of workers building may schooners that fished and traded on the Eas Coast.
