Mileage Distances Between Canadian Cities

We now have itineraries for most stretches of the Trans-Canada on our web site.

In estimating driving time for a trip, use the following table. If you are driving for distance, you can probably average 100 km per hour cross-country. Your speed will be much slower in densely populated areas, especially when travelling during “rush hour”. The big issue in planning a cross-country trip is the daily driving hours, which will determine where and how you will overnight.

How FAST can you rive this? I once drove 3500 km in a day and a half, with 5 adults taking continuous turns driving & co-piloting in 4 hour shifts (with a 15 minute break for gas, food & bathroom).

Adults travelling might handle up to 8-12 hours of butt-time, sitting in a car. If you are travelling with children, stopping at rest stops and several of the along-the-way attractions (especially when travelling with children), you can probably average about half that. In the summertime, daylight hours in the western provinces (which lie further north), can give you 16 hours of daily light while in the winter, you can be lucky to get 6 hours of daylight (assuming roads in good, plowed & clear condition). To make your trip planning easier, our community attractions information has included average times at many of the attractions along the way.

Match your trip’s start and end points in the table below. If a row-column puts you in the wrong kilometres (blue) or miles (white) area, try column-row to get right units.

Sample trip planning calculation:

from Montreal to Calgary: 2323 miles or 3739 km. Which should take about 37 hours. If travelling with adults in a hurry this may take 3 days, on a leisurely pace (7 driving hours per day and a couple of attractions) 5 days, and with kids (5 driving hours per day, with stops at all waterslides, oversize statues, and mini-golf courses along the way) 7 days. Add time for stopovers in cities like (for example) Ottawa and Winnipeg, or for recuperation from late nights out in such cities.

For towns and communities not in this table, find the closest major commmunity and then go to the Detailed Itineraries for the plus/minus distance to your destination.
