Spruce Grove, Alberta’s 16th largest city with a population of over 34,000, is one of western Canada’s fastest growing communities, having doubled in size since 1999. Spruce Grove is named for the stands of tall spruce trees in the area, and was originally settled by French and Scottish families in 1891. With the arrival of the railroad, the community became a busy grain trading centre. Spruce Grove became a village in 1955, became a town in 1971, and a city in 1986. Spruce Grove’s recreation includes an indoor pool with hot tub and toddler pool, and the Arena with curling rinks and twin ice arenas.
