The gallery is named for the Victorian woman who served the King of Siam as governess and whose memoirs served as inspiration for Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I. Founding the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design was just another feather in her cap. Three exhibition spaces serve as a showcase for the college faculty and students. The displays focus on contemporary studio and media art.Weekly exhibitions include contemporary art by faculty, students and visiting artists of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. This renovated heritage building houses Nova Scotia’s major arts institution with 6,000 works in a permanent collection of contemporary art has major works by Christopher Pratt, Alex Colville, John Nesbitt, and Dawn McNutt. Includes Maritime and folk art by artists such as wood-carver Sydney Howard and painter Joe Norris, and the actual home of the late folk painter Maude Lewis, whose bright, cheery paintings cover the tiny structure inside and out. Open year-round Tues. to Fri. 10am to 6pm, Sat. and Sun. noon to 5pm. Admission $5, seniors $3, students $2.
