Geraldton, Ontario

Geraldton is a small town of 1.000 residents located in Northwestern Ontario on the Northern Route of the Trans-Canada Highway #11. Geraldton is 160 km NE of Nipigon, and 40 km W of Longlac and 250 km W of Hearst.

Geraldton History

The town was founded in 1935 by prospectors looking for gold in the area. In the early days, the town was known as “Little Long Lac” after the nearby lake. The name was later changed to Geraldton in honor of mining executive and politician, Gerald Fauteux.

The town experienced rapid growth with the nearby discovery of gold. The Little Long Lac Gold Mine, which opened in 1936, was one of the largest gold mines in the world at the time, and employed thousands of people.

The town also had a large pulp and paper mill, which operated from 1942 to 2008 and was a major area employer (at its peak, it employed over 1,200 people) .

Today, Geraldton is a thriving community, and though the gold mines are no longer in operation, the town remains an important center for forestry, and is home to several other businesses and services.
