Red Lake, Ontario

Red Lake is a small town located in Northwestern Ontario, located on the northern end of Highway 105, about 170 km N of Vermilion Bay (the Red Lake Airport is another 10 km further N on the highway).,

The town was named after the nearby Red Lake, which is known for its excellent fishing and natural beauty.

There are many historic sites and landmarks that can be visited throughout the area. The town’s rich history is celebrated through a variety of cultural and heritage events,

Red Lake History

The area around Red Lake was originally inhabited by the Ojibwe people

European settlers first arrived in the late 1800s. In the early 1920s, gold was discovered in the area. This led to a rush of prospecting, mining activity, and establishment of mining companies in the region. During the 1930s, Red Lake became a booming mining town, and the population grew to over 3,000 people.

The town was home to several large gold mines, producing millions of ounces of gold over the years. The mining industry attracted new residents that included miners, engineers, and other workers.

During World War II, Red Lake was home to several military training facilities, which employed many local residents.

Today, Red Lake is still a thriving centre for the mining industry and several large gold mines operate in the area and are major employers.
