Cornwall, PEI

Cornwall is just 6 kilometers west of  and just across the North River from Charlottetown, the capital city of the province.

Cornwall, known as “Princetown”  in the early 1800s, was primarily used for farming and fishing. The town was later renamed “Cornwall” in honor of Prince Edward, Duke of Cornwall. By the late 1800s, Cornwall  was home to several mills, including a grist mill, saw mill, and carding mill, as well as a general store and a post office.

In the early 1900s, the town’s economy began to shift from agriculture and fishing to manufacturing. This shift was lead by The Cornwall Manufacturing Company, established in 1906, which became one of the town’s largest employers producing goods from furniture, shoes, to textiles.

Following World War II, Cornwall’s population grew from approximately 600 in the 1940s to over 4,000 in the 1970s.
