This 1400 person town began as the 1672 grant of the Seigneury of Lotbinière to Rene-Louis Chartier de Lotbiniere, and is one of the few that is still in original family hands. Lotbiniere was on the Conseil Souverien, and despite his absence managed to develop the property, which quickly became one of the more important villages in the area. Today, you will see many old stone and wooden homes, now protected by the provincial government.
